In the second video of our 3-part Millennial Minute series on How do you get a job without any experience?, we discuss the importance of being your true self.
Don’t try to be someone that you’re not in an interview. It will define the tone of how you will perform in that position.
“You shouldn’t be faking it, you should come as you are, but come as the best version that you are.” – Jaz
Don’t sell yourself as something that you are not in an interview. This could actually set you up to fail in that position. Why?
- You’ll have to be someone you aren’t. This can create self-doubt and create imposter syndrome. Over time, you will begin to feel stuck in that position.
- You won’t be as productive as you could be because you will be focusing your energy on performing in areas that are not your strengths.
- There could be tension with your employer, because you don’t have the specific skills they are looking for. And, they will come to see that.
“I want honesty. I want transparency. I want to know who you are, not who are not.” – Mike
Be your authentic self in interviews
What do you do if you aren’t quite sure you fit the bill?
There may be things you don’t know how to do within that position, and you need to be ok with that. Be honest and say that you are willing to learn the skills desired for that position. If your mindset is not “I will learn how” then maybe it is not the right job for you.
“Millennials really value showing up and being who they are. They want to feel accepted and appreciated for who they are, and for skills they have” — Jaz
Give it 100%. But, give 100% of YOU.
